The deep meaning and wisdom contained in the braiding of sweetgrass, a sacred plant that has traditionally been used by indigenous peoples in North America.

It begins with making a braid of 21 strands of sweetgrass. This braid is not merely a decorative object, but a powerful symbol that represents the connection with the past, the present, and the future.

The first seven strands represent the seven generations before us—parents, grandparents, and ancestors. They have paved the way for us and made us who we are. Unfortunately, many of the old paths our ancestors used to find us and help us heal have been destroyed by modern development.
The next seven strands represent the seven sacred life lessons: love, respect, honesty, courage, wisdom, truth, and humility. These lessons may seem simple, but they are incredibly powerful and beautiful when we truly understand and apply them in our lives.
The last seven strands are for the seven generations after us—our children, grandchildren, and future descendants. Everything we do affects them and the earth they will inherit. It is up to us to break negative cycles and replace them with something better.
When we bring the three braids together, they represent yesterday, today, and tomorrow; spirit, body, and soul; man, woman, and child; and the connection with The Creator.

For further exploration, I recommend reading books about indigenous spirituality and the power of plants, such as “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer and “The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom” by Don Miguel Ruiz. Also, exploring mindfulness and self-compassion can help put the lessons of kindness and respect for ourselves and others into practice.
